Australian Premier Performance
of
After the Fire (harmony returns)
by Michelle Nelson

Michelle is a Melbourne based composer and guitarist.  She describes this as 'a simple piece written in response
to the devastating bushfires of February, 2009 in Victoria's Yarra Valley.
The Chum Creek fire very nearly claimed the property of her mother, and the scene around that area in the few weeks
after the fire provided the inspiration.

After a discordant introduction a simple melody appears and gradually gains momentum throughout the work,
representing the gentle way that nature restores its own harmony after a natural disaster.'

Premiered in Cambridge, UK in 2010, Concordia is pleased to give the Australian premier, and Michelle will be playing the solo guitar part.

The other major item on this programme is the fascinating work
Klezmer Suite
written for clarinet, piano accordion, tuba and percussion.
Soloists will be David Laity Clarinet, Juliette Maxwell - piano accordion, Andrew Head - tuba, and Dannielle Wilkinson - percussion.

This piece was written by Tober-Vogt, a 20th Century composer living in Germany.
The plucked string movement owes a great debt to this woman for many interesting pieces in the repertoire.
The word Klezmer comes from two Hebrew words, Kley and Zemer, meaning a vessel of music and song.
The solo instruments, clarinet and piano accordion take on human characteristics such as joyous exuberance or soulful wailing.
A combination of Hasidic prayer and folk music, Klezmer music accompanied all important rites of passage in the villages of Eastern Europe
from 1800 onwards.  Klezmer was almost lost during the Holocaust, but has since found new popularity.

The Klezmer Suite can be heard on Concordia's second compact disc ' Eclectic Collection'  featuring today's soloists David and Juliette, so buy a copy and take it home this afternoon.
